Search for MonsterJobs

Here is a story about searching for a MonsterJob. You see, two of the largest employers in Monaca have received economic assistance from the state that should help retain some 900 manufacturing MonsterJobs in the glass and metals industries.

The Rendell Administration yesterday said the aid packages are directed at Anchor Hocking, a glassware maker, and Horsehead Corp., the nation's largest processor of zinc. Frank Horrigan, regional director of the Governor's Action Team, called manufacturing "an essential part of our economy" that must have the state's full support.

"This investment to retain manufacturing monsterjobs will not only allow these companies to be more competitive, but will have long-lasting effects on the local community," he said.

Horsehead, which landed in bankruptcy court protection after zinc prices hit record lows in 2002, reorganized last year as an affiliate of Sun Capital, which acquired substantially all of the company's operating assets. Its brands include Zinc Corp. of America and Horsehead Resource Development.

The company received a $300,000 Opportunity Grant through the state Department of Community and Economic Development to help alter a small on-site power plant so it can use a less costly grade of coal. The power plant is managed for Horsehead by Cinergy Solutions Inc., of Cincinnati.

Company Vice President Ali Alavi said the renovation of the factory's power plant, originally built in 1957, will help moderate rising energy costs, one of the biggest expenses in producing zinc.

"It saves us money in the sense that energy prices will be less than what they would have been," he said, "but they are still higher than what they were."

Horsehead employs about 900 company-wide, including roughly 780 in Pennsylvania. Besides Monaca, the company operates a metal powder and zinc recycling facility in Palmerton. Employment at the Monaca plant, the company's headquarters, is about 600, Alavi said.

The Governor's Action Team helped Anchor Hocking secure a $1.05 million financial package, including a $450,000 Opportunity Grant, $500,000 from a state Machinery and Equipment Loan Fund, and $100,000 in Monsterjob training assistance.

Anchor Hocking , a maker and seller of glass oven ware and other glass products, last January announced a restructuring of its Monaca plant aimed at eliminating up to half of its 500 employees. It now plans to maintain employment at 300 to 350, Horrigan said.

Anchor Hocking plant manager Dan Taylor could not be reached for comment. In January, he said the plan was to consolidate operations in Monaca into a much-larger plant in Lancaster, Ohio, where Anchor Hocking is headquartered.

John Poskosky, president of one of the United Steelworker locals at the plant, said about 200 people lost their jobs in the just-completed restructuring. Not as many jobs moved to Ohio as originally anticipated for a variety of reasons, he said. Anchor Hocking, a division of Global Home Products LLC, rebuilt a glass-making furnace in Monaca so it could continue operations, the state said.
